Nasrettin Hoca:
Nasreddin hoca was born in a small village near Sivrihisar.
Later he maved to Akşehir and he lived there until 1284.
He was witty and wise, and he had a good sense of homour.
For centuries Turkish people passed his stories down from generation to generation. Each generation also created new stories and attributed them to Hoca.
Today his stories reflect Turkish people.
The themes of Hoca's stories are universal and timeless. They reveal the weaknesses of human nature and society, so they are told in many places around the world.
UNESCO named 1996 as Nasreddin Hoca Year and every year from 5th - 10th July there is an international Nasreddin Hoca Festival in Akşehir.
Here is a short story about him:
One day Nasreddin Hoca took an arrogant young man out in his boat. There was another man is the boat and Hoca was talking with him. The young man listened to them for a while and noticed the errors in Hoca's speech. He asked Hoca: "Tell me, Hocam, did you study grammar?"
Hoca replied: "No."
The young man said: "What a pity! You wasted halg of your life."
After a while a terrible strom broke out. This time Hoca asked the young man:
"Did you learn to swim my son?" "No", said the young man.
Hoca said: "What pity! You wasted your entire life! We are about to sink!"
