This filter detects a server error 404 response to a web page request. Inherently, there is nothing malicious about this behavior. A public tool called PadBuster is available and can be used to automate certain padding oracle inference attacks. This filter can be used to block such attacks. This filter should be used in conjunction with the TippingPoint SMS's thresholding feature. A reasonable baseline threshold should be established on a site-by-site basis before enabling this filter in block or quarantine mode. After a baseline is established, an attack threshold can be configured in the SMS. A typical threshold could be set at approximately 1,000 per minute, but for best results, the threshold should be tuned to the expected number of errors in the environment, plus an additional factor amount. Note: This filter should not be used outside of the SMS's thresholding feature. It will fire repeatedly on normal TCP traffic. Note: This filter can be used in conjunction with filter 10501 which detects a server 500 response.
